159. Gurney Weldon LEAMAN

LEAMAN, WELDON GURNEY - WWII Veteran - 1925 - 2015 - Weldon G. Leaman, 89, of The Veterans’ Health Centre, and formerly of Lower Coverdale, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Born in Pine Glen, Weldon was the son of the late Gurney and Hazel (Berry) Leaman. Husband of 57 years to Greta (Robinson), who passed away on October 31, 2000. Weldon was predeceased by his siblings, Kathleen, Orville, Allen and Stanley. Survived by his son, Coleman and daughter-in-law, Sherry; grandchildren, Rhonda, Rae Anne, Kimberly and great grandchildren, Andrew, Ashton and Keira. Weldon, at a very young age, worked in his father’s lumber mill and later at the Record Foundry. He joined the CNR at about the age of 17 and soon was called upon to serve overseas during the Second World War, along with his father and older brother, Orville, as they came together in Italy, moving up through Holland, France and Germany. Fortunately, all three returned safely to Canada. Weldon returned to the CNR and mostly drove transport until retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Masonic Order, as well as the Royal Canadian Legion. He was of the Baptist faith. Weldon and Greta established their home in Lower Coverdale. A hobby farm, flowers and gardening were their favourite pastimes. Weldon’s knowledge of, and ability to use, a wide variety of tools allowed him to build a house, barn, garage and workshop. To Weldon, cutting trees, clearing land and splitting wood was a sporting activity. Greta spoiled the animals, was a great cook and made sure the preserves and pickling were in place annually. They made a good team. I was a fortunate son. Special thanks to close niece, Sheila Galipeau and to the Staff at Canterbury Hall and The Veterans’ Health Centre for the care and compassion shown to Weldon.
